At long last, the wedding post.....

BEFORE YOU READ THIS AND JUDGE THIS
PLEASE RECALL THAT IN A FORMER LIFE
I WAS A WEDDING DIRECTOR FOR 12 YEARS
& THOUGH I HAD SOME PRETTY WILD WEDDINGS
THIS ONE WOULD HAVE MADE ME SCREAM OUT LOUD

So several months ago I was with the NSO (you'll have to go far back to learn about him) and he said M found a girl and he's getting married 30 June. I said oh, is this one legal? His last GF was a college student from France who wanted a ring, an education and a green card and a pilot's license. Nope, this one is divorced and has 3 adult sons. Ok, sounds promising, and she's got 2 corgis and tattoos. Can't be all bad?

Time passed. Date got closer. "Do you want to sing in a volunteer choir? He wants to have all this music sung and for free." Hmmm. Well let's see the music. Gets to the week before the wedding, still no music, and the word is that he's written several pieces that he wants, no make that, demands to be performed and the people who have seen them say they are unsingable.

I finally get to see the invitation, two sheets of computer printouts with instructions. I can see saving money. But they could have sprung for invitation paper, just a little step up on the class ladder.

So the day arrives and we drive to the wedding location. A huge imposing Gothic structure on Wilshire Blvd near downtown LA, with a lovely old organ. Score that a good mark. Various sundry folks wandering around. Vocalizing being heard. I bowed out, I love to sing but my sight reading is not up to par on hard music. The NSO wanders up and gets to work, I just wander. I went to the front of the church and picked up a bulletin, but didn't see the extra song sheet. Ah another trip to the front of the church and there they were, along with little bottles of bubbles to blow.
[This is one thing I heartily approve of, rice was nasty to clean up, bird seed meant bird crap but bubbles are just plain fun.]

Back to the sanctuary, things are getting close. There are guys in morning coats wandering around (4 PM wedding), wearing Converse All Stars and chewing gum. 4 o'clock came and went. There were Gregorian chants being played prior to the start and that was comforting which proved to be the only thing that was.

The Program:

It was 10 pages long. Mostly readings and some responses for the congregation. 1 congregational song that was not singable. Music was to be sung in a loft that was not amplified, and one song that the choir had to troop back down to the piano to sing that was not legible to anyone unless you were in the front row.

Omitted from the program were:

The names of the Maid of Honor
Junior Bridesmaid
4 Bridesmaids
2 Flower Girls
*
Parents of the Bride.
*
Best Man
Groomsmen ( the sons of the bride)
The Reader and the name of the Officiant.
Organist and Choir Director
I found that disrespectful to all involved.

  • The Wedding Ceremony
  • So on we go:
  •  1 Call to Marriage (from loft)
  • Procession
  • Grand Procession
  • 1 Call the Worship (from loft)
  • Celebrant speaks of service
  • Hymn written by groom who has never had a class in theory
  • Beginning of service
  • Kyrie from Rheinberger Mass, downstairs at the piano
  • More back and forth from Officiant
  • *** Basically this was an Episcopal service written out***
  • 3 pages of readings.
  • Page 4 was the exchange of vows and rings.
  • Though there was a mic nothing was heard.
  • 1 short reading from the Song of Solomon.
  • Pages 5-8 was the
  • Great Thanksgiving Liturgy (all read)
  • Communion was offered, 15 people went. There was some awkwardness when the officiant said the congregation is invited to commune after the wedding party and the choir. However the choir is singing during communion:
  • Bogoroditse Devo from Vespers by Rachmaninov
  • Lords Prayer recited by congregation.
  • Lords Prayer sung by choir.
  • Post communion prayers.
  • Blessing of marriage.
  • Announcement of Couple
  • Sevenfold Amen
  • (as this was being sung the wedding party left
  • someone got their signals crossed on that one.)
  • Recessional was the Toccata from Symphony V by Widor.

Whew......started at 415 and ended at 545. And through the entire ceremony the groomsmen, maid of honor and groom chewed gum.

We followed the noise to the reception, canned music way too loud to offer any semblance of a chance of conversation with the people you were seated with. The hors d'oeuvres were basic finger food, salsa chips, empanadas, flautas and water. The main dish hadn't even arrived and the servers had no idea what it was going to be. We made an executive decision, because it was close to 6 and the photos were still being taken. We made an exit.

Ok you say, it was a wedding and it wasn't perfect. I guess I'm stodgy and a bit old fashioned about how a ceremony should proceed. If there aren't mikes upstairs get them some. You plan this wedding around these lovely pieces of music and then no one can hear them. Pick music that your volunteer choir of friends can sing....not some obscure slavic piece, recognize they are doing this out of friendship and love for you. Give them some recognition. You pick and choose together and don't throw every thing you've ever read in to make an 1 1/2 hour service in an un air-conditioned cathedral church. Give the bride some say in how she wants this wedding, even though it's your first and her second.

I doubt if I will spend any time with the happy couple unless it's an absolute necessity. I wish them health, happiness and a wonderful life together.

The bunny who's glad she's out of the wedding business.

Not tonight honey......

My arm is all jacked up and I took a pain pill and muscle relaxer and who knows what might come out of my brain .........

But I promise I'll.............

02 July, 2012

I can't write it tonight because I've got a headache

but hang on out there for the first wedding I've ever rated a -3. It was a spectacle and just well, I'll write about it tomorrow night.

Clue # 1: 9 pages of readings
Clue # 2: No mention of the 6 attendants on both sides, flower girls, children in wedding party.
Clue # 3: Volunteer choir with no mikes.

Are you waiting with baited breath? Hang on.

Out and about TOA today....

We were out and about this afternoon and driving down Crenshaw Blvd, something caught the corner of my eye. Couldn't go back just then, since I had to deliver a WN boarding pass to a technophobe.

I did my good deed and then we came back down and turned on Airport Drive and saw these beauties:

Sorry for the crappy photos but I had to use my phone. These beauties are part of the Western Museum of Flight. http://www.wmof.com/

When my airplane comes in with my bag of cash I'm going to join the museum.

I put another candle on the birthday cake

My daughter and I went to the Los Angeles Zoo. We missed the Killer Monkeys, but we saw a well developed ass end of a silverback gorilla, a rhinoceros who favored us with his back side as well. Monitor lizards, the new LAIR, Living Amphibians, Invertebrates & Reptiles. I'm not fond of creepy crawlies but they were well protected behind glass.

Today I went with my mom to her Retinal doctor because she has wet macular degeneration in both eyes. The doctor assured her she's be seeing better within a 8 months by going to join a clinical trial. We're keeping our fingers crossed.

I am going to end this short missive tonight. I have a wedding and reception to go to tomorrow and I'm beat tonight.

Ciao peeps.

Every time I drive by Fox Studios I sniffle a little.

Living out of Coleman Campers & I gotta get away

The fridge saga continues. It's supposed to be here tomorrow between 1130 and 1330.
I will believe it when I see it.

This weekend we did some sightseeing in the area. We went down to the Seaman's Memorial in San Pedro and took Duffy T Dog along for a ride.
Duffy was not going to even think about going in the fountain.

Duffy and The Rabbit at the end of a 68' cannon barrel
Duffy being distracted by boats in the harbor, and the Rabbit looking at the loading end of the barrel. If you look closely you can see the mast of the USS Iowa which now lives alongside the LA Harbor Main Channel in San Pedro. It will open to the public July 7th.

The Merchant Marine Memorial. Behind it on the slabs are the names of the CA merchant marine seamen who lost their lives in service to their country.

Tuna Fisherman Memorial.
There is a church in San Pedro called Maria Stella Mare
Mary Star of the Sea where Christ is holding a tuna boat.

This is Redondo Beach. The view from El Torito Restaurant where my friend, my daughter and I celebrated my birthday early with tequila. It was a lovely day.

Peace and Out Kiddos.

So Nashville is gone like the wind

I was really hoping to go to Nashville for the convention (AGO) but it's slipping away like the sand does in the tide.
Our fridge died last weekend and we bought a new one to be delivered today. But, it was too wide. The slot for the fridge was not wide enough. Went back to the store and we picked out another one by the same manufacturer that was narrower and a bit smaller. It was higher priced!!!! I said can you knock it down to what we paid? Supposedly we're going to hear tomorrow when the delivery will be. in the meantime coolers are overtaking my kitchen.

Next week is my birthday. I'm hopefully going out to dinner. If not, I would not want to be around this house at all.

I am creating . . . nothing right now

I am going…   to go to the grocery store and get something to cook on the grill

I am reading . . . “Volcano Watch”

I am hoping…  things start looking up

I am hearing…  Law and Order: CI

Doug Phillips is a tool . . . . updated

We add this little reminder . . . .

What in the blue blazes is a manhood arsenal?
Who comes up with these things?
Good grief.

Not only is he a tool, he's a mean spirited little man who tells his family members that don't agree with his type of patriarchal nonsense that they are fools and they will go to hell. Nice kind of relative, huh? Mean spirited & evil.

Yesterday was my 747th post

In honor of that (and the fact that I've kept this blog up) here is the queen of the skies and my favorite airline:

I flew on these planes during my restless teens and twenties. I loved this airplane. I loved riding in the front, going upstairs to the lounge, and just being on her. She took me to Paris, London, cross this country more times than I can count.

We will wait and see

I needed new glasses. I went to Lenscrafters with my Rx and they wanted over $400 for a pair of glasses even after my insurance. I said thank you no. A friend of mine in Memphis said if you have your Rx you can go to this website and get exactly what you need for a lot less.

So I did. I went to zennioptical.com and ordered a pair of nice glasses with progressive lenses and transitions for 126.95. They'll be here in about 2 1/2 weeks, hopefully before I leave for Nashville.

Nashville is tentative if all the i's can be dotted and t's can be crossed. It's for the AGO 2012 convention. I am really hoping that I can go. Trusting that it will happen. The concerts that are scheduled are wonderful, the city is bursting with things to see.

Peace. Out.

So we found out what my problem was. . . . .

This puppy was the culprit.
Now I'm on a very strong antibiotic and I'm drinking lots of liquid.
Hopefully the pain will be gone soon.
This could have been a lot worse than it was.
Thankfully it wasn't.

Pay attention to your body.

Oh I forgot something, it's new at LAX

Air France is now bringing its A380 for flights 65/66 into LAX. The airport is being proactive and has electronic signs at the pertinent exits for the people who are meeting or delivering passengers. This is a good thing. Normally AF comes into Terminal 2, but the A380 is using the Tom Bradley International Terminal aka TBIT. TBIT is undergoing a huge construction project which will go on ad infinitum due to $$$ change orders and contractor issues. When it's finally done, the existing terminal will be torn down to make a kinder gentler terminal area.  So we welcome the new plane to LAX.

One more thing, the vaunted new luggage security area which is in place at TBIT is not doing what they wanted.
A $140-million baggage screening facility that was part of a recent remodel of the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport has been able to process only about half the luggage it was designed to handle, airport officials said Monday.
Deputy Airport Director Roger Johnson said the facility, which relies on a complicated system of conveyors to feed bags into and out of security scanners, was supposed to screen 3,240 pieces of luggage an hour but has been processing between 1,500 and 1,800 bags an hour.
Because of the problem, Johnson said that occasionally during peak travel times bags have had to be taken to the nearby American Airlines terminal so to be scanned before being returned to Bradley and loaded onto international flights.
“It has not been that often, but it is problematic,” Johnson said.
He attributed the capacity issues to inadequate operational procedures, not breakdowns of the machinery, which is housed in a 45,000-square-foot annex that was included in a $737-million remodel of the Bradley Terminal that was completed in 2010.
This is the TSA's area of concern. Either they aren't staffing the luggage screening area properly or they aren't moving fast enough with the amount of bags coming in. Can't do the old we'll not do 10% of the bags to move things along anymore, which is what I heard happened in the old days.

Have a nice week.

Chili con carne not chili macaroni.

When I was growing up chili was tomatos, some ground chili pepper, hamburger, some onions and macaroni. This was the norm. Probably the same norm that a good number of households in the primarily German/Polish area of the state we lived in.

As I got older, my tastes were refined. I found that chili, in this state is not the same as what I grew up with. It can be red or white, with meat, with beans, one with one and some with none. Kidney beans could be replaced with pinto beans, black beans, broad beans.

I've pretty much come to a conclusion that there is not one right way to make the soup. So today I've cut up 2 sweet onions, thrown in some crushed garlic to sweat in oil, 1.3 lbs of choice cut up beef sirloin, 1 can of crushed tomatos, 2 cans of fire roasted tomatos, 1 can of chili tomatos, 1 large can of red kidney beans, 1 regular can of black beans. To that I added a mixture of dark ground chili pepper, ground ancho chili, ground chipotle chili, ground red pepper flakes, some Spanish paprika, and 1 shot of Chipotle Tabasco. Now it's simmering on the back burner and in about 2 1/2 hours it will be food. This is is:

Peace.

Whew

Today was one of those days. My mom picked me up and I drove her to the orthopedist who is a really nice doctor. He agreed that she should go back to therapy and she will. Then we braved the aisles of Costco, she pushed the cart, while I ran the aisles. Trader Joes was next and I strongly suggested to her that she should get Cookie Butter. OMG, that stuff is like crack.

Tomorrow morning we'll be at it again. This time to the Alpine Market to pick up some wonderful tasty German pickles for our dinner on Sunday. Sunday we're having seafood lasagna for our Mother's Day dinner. Mom loves it, I can make it, and my husband thinks it's wonderful. I would prefer a nice steak, baked potatos and some carrots and parsnips parboiled and cooked in a nice orange juice glaze. I'll get myself some nice boneless thin pork chops, sauerkraut and mashed potatos and make it for myself one night next week.

After I got home, I called my friend because he wanted to get a Starbucks and chat for a while. It was pleasant to see him and we talked for about an hour about things we've seen while apart. We used to be quite the pair, going places and doing things that ranged from conventions to concerts to just hanging out around the pool. He has a birthday this week and turns 67 and is going to Catalina for a couple of days to relax.
Lucky him.

Have a good start to your weekend.

Dream another dream of me....& a comment re that person who says I'm mean

Last night I had another one of those dreams with someone who I really used to like a lot. If it ever came true I'd be Alice in Wonderland and then some. I wasn't even thinking of this person. And there were others who were complicit in the dream as well. Like running through barriers separating sides of a runway from a street... and it ending up somewhere totally different. Now if I'd been drinking, you know I might understand it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And she flounced and came back. And she did the same damn thing almost exactly 1 year ago. Wild.
She's reinventing herself into a parable of fascinating womanhood. And taking over an innocent FB group too. Sorry C, you're a fake. Pure and simple. Get over yourself. Try to be honest, realize there are valid versions of the Bible. You'd have a hard time in France and Spain telling them the KJV is the only version of the Bible. Later honey pie.
