Friday and it's time to shuffle on down the road

First off, it's raining, thundering and lightning outside. I'm not on the power strip right now so I figure I'm safe for about a 1/2 hour.
I got the hair cut today and when I was in the parking lot I saw a huge lightning bolt over the peninsula. But no thunder. Odd. In addition to getting my hair cut I got my chin and lips threaded. First time for everything.

So here we go:

  1. Have You Ever Loved A Woman                 Eric Clapton
  2. Love in the Club                                            The Baseballs
  3. Sexy, Sexy                                                    Brian Setzer Orchestra
  4. Rawhide                                                         Frankie Laine
  5. Tell the Truth                                                  Derek & the Dominos
  6. Braveheart (Main Title)                                  Boston Pops Orchestra
  7. Christmas at Sea                                           Sting
  8. One For My Baby                                         Tony Bennett with John Mayer
  9. Organ Prelude on "Bryn Calfaria"                Trinity College
  10. Moon Dance                                                  Michael Buble

So later gators!

Sweet and Sour Green Beans

I mentioned on another blog that I made this quite often. So here's the recipe. Enjoy.
Ingredients
  • 1/2 package bacon ( You could use turkey bacon but the flavor is not the same at all, it's the grease that gives it the zing, and for me the thicker the bacon the better the dish)
  • 1/2 onion, chopped--- a sweet onion is my favorite
  • 32 ounces french style green beans (or other green beans) That's 2 bags of frozen ones.
  • 2 T vinegar--- I like Seasoned Rice Wine Vinegar and I like a little more if it's not zippy
  • 2 T sugar
  • salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
  1. Cut bacon into one inch segments.
  2. Place bacon and onions in skillet. Cook over medium heat until browned, stirring often. Remove to plate.
  3.  Add beans to bacon grease and continue cooking over medium heat until they are to desired tenderness.
  4. Add vinegar and sugar. Stir.
  5.  Add bacon and onions back and let simmer a few minutes, stirring often.
  6. Salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve Hot. Can be reheated in a covered dish in the microwave.

My great grandfather and grandmother. . .

emigrated to Wisconsin from the Pommerz in the late 1870's with their 2 sons and 2 daughters.
This picture was taken in the late 1890's.

I've only seen one picture of my grandmother taken in the '30's and none of my grandfather. My cousins who've I just made contact with (I'm 20 years younger than the youngest) don't seem to have any photos.

My great grandfather does look a lot like my dad, his grandson.

Monday musings

There's chicken and vegetables simmering away in the crockpot, I'll add the dumplings in right before my daughter comes home from work. I like dinners that basically make themselves. Last night was vegetable lasagna and salad. I also put out some salami and crackers and cheese and we could have made a whole dinner out of that. My mom came over and watched football and cheesy sci fi movies with us too.

The hives were especially nasty this morning. On the left side of my face they were like huge welts and my jaw line was swollen. Usually by now they've pretty much faded but my arms and chest still look nasty and I can feel the little prickling of the skin which tells me new ones are coming out. No reason. No explanation. Blood work ruled out autoimmune disease but I'm really wondering. I don't feel bad, I don't have any other symptoms, but I've got hives. They are actually called urticaria. Now mine are chronic. I'm not happy. I need a diagnostician like Gregory House to figure out what is causing these hives. Cranky or not, he's the one....bwahahahahaa

later!

15 September, 2011

I have a friend

Who loves me even though we don't agree on some things. We talk about the Bible, we talk about kids, we talk about dogs ( you gotta love someone who'd have as many dogs as she has kids if her husband would let her), and we talk about life. We talk about how God works in our lives, not the way we want, but how he wants.  We talk about how we pray, it may not be the same way, but it's directed to the same place. We talked about our shared love for fried Jack in the Box Tacos. It's a guilty pleasure and I'd rather have 2 of their cheap-o tacos than the good ones at the Mexican restaurant down the street that drowns theirs in lettuce. She's my friend and I thank God every day for her wisdom, her humor and her steadfastness in the Lord.

I went to my dermatologist today. She's ok. I mean that. I feel comfortable with her. We were going over the list of things that might cause my hives, since my blood tests have ruled out auto immune disease, allergies to medications, food, and what ever. One of the things on the list was pregnancy. I looked at her and said nope, no way on God's green earth. We laughed over that. I'm going back on the acid reflux med even though I don't have acid reflux. It seems to work with the antihistamine that I'm taking to block some receptors. It's not cheap but if it works, I'll be happy. I am tired of seeing the hives.

After the doctor I went to the drug store. Picked up the reflux meds and got some saline spray. The worst thing about these meds is that my nose gets all dried up and I cough all night. This stuff sure makes my nose nice. We've moved all of our prescriptions to the 24 hour pharmacy that's actually open 24 hours.  There are a lot of drugstores open 24 but not all the pharmacies.

I hate these hives

I thought they were diminishing but nope, back this morning full force. My legs look like red blotches surrounded by white circles. They are also on the top and bottom of my arms. Drag.

My home town newspaper had a thing about Tell Us About Your Favorite Teacher. Just for shits and giggles I entered it by telling about my 3rd grade teacher. I adored her. She told me it was ok to read as much as I wanted to read. They picked my anecdote. I sent them my class picture from the 3rd grade and a picture of myself as I am today (I hope their scanner doesn't break). We shall see what they publish.

Night bunnies!

11 September, 2011

Where were you 10 years ago?

I heard about the attacks as I was driving my son to school. We had not turned the TV on that morning which was very unusual. We always watched KTLA 5 Morning News. This day we did not. We heard Rick Dees on KIIS-FM talking about the tragedies in NY and DC. I took my son to school, I asked him if he was okay with that. He said yes. My daughter was in 7th grade and getting ready to walk to middle school when she turned on the TV and saw the 2nd tower fall. She went to school because as she told me later, she was afraid not to. School let out early that day and we watched in horrible fascination as every channel was focused on smoldering ruins. No one knew for certain how many lives had been lost. No one knew if more attacks were to come. Stories would come forth in the coming days of the kindness of people in tiny Canadian cities who made welcome the new refugees who were on planes forced to land when the flying ban went on. How many people made new friends that day? How many people walked aimlessly trying to make sense of the horror? And now 10 years later, what has happened to America?

Our personal freedoms once taken for granted are being eroded in the name of Homeland Security. Grandmothers being strip searched by over zealous "patriots" working for our own government. People are reporting people speaking in a foreign language sitting on a plane. No explanation is given when people are taken off of planes, altering plans, delaying arrivals, because of the paranoia that is fed by Big Brother.  In the meantime our infrastructure has taken a beating by means of hurricanes, tropical storms, floods, tornados, earthquakes. A president asks to rebuild the nation and is rebuffed by his opponents who owe their souls to the company store. These aren't the good old days and they certainly aren't what I imagined as my life as I enter into "my golden years". Nope. Not at all.

As ever, YMMV.
