My mom walked into our house through the breezeway, up the 2 steps to the kitchen to the intersection that led to our living room. She turned left and saw my dad, dead on the couch, with our Fox Terrier, maddingly trying to wake Daddy up.

It was lunch time at school, I was on the lower playground and someone came to me and said they saw an ambulance at our house. I thought perhaps something had happened to the lady who watched us after school. Then I saw someone taking my brother up the stairs and my teacher took me to my brother who was with the special ed teacher who actually was a distant cousin. He led us to the office where my mother stood with tears in her eyes. She said, "Frank's dead". Then she started to sob. She led us out to the car and we drove home. There were already a plethora of county sheriff's cars there and neighbors and friends from the hospital where my mother taught in the school of anesthesia. One of her friends took us downtown to the Lad and Lassie store to buy clothes for the funeral.

The body had been examined by our family physician who told my mom because of the bruising on the left side, he was pretty sure that he had had an aneurysm. We saw our dad the next day at the funeral home. The same place his brother had been in several years earlier. Compared to pictures that were taken, they could have been twins. Dad's photo was taken by the newspaper and given to my mom.

He had been a county sheriff for over 30 years. It was said at his funeral that he knew every street and road in the county, the largest in the state. He was known at the one-room schools in the rural areas as the friendly cop. He was known by the parents of my friends as the cop who pinched them when they were speeding, DUI, or fighting. He was known to me as Daddy.

The man whose lap I sat in, and beamed when I could read books to him. The man who took my brother and me to parks so we could fly to the sky on the swings. The man who baited our fish hooks and ran the engine in our 13 foot Alumnacraft boat and took us to the resort and got us to duck our heads when we went under low bridges on the lake. The man who followed a path from our cabins to the lake when I was in girl scout camp between 5th and 6th grades. The man who took us on the Milwaukee Road to Chicago to see the Ringling Brothers Circus and saw Gunther Goebel Williams walk a beautiful tiger around a ring to "Walking My Baby Back Home".

The person who came to me 2 weeks after he died, sat on my bed and told me to take care of my mother. So for 51 years, I've tried to do that to the best of my ability.

So, Daddy, it's been a lot of water under the bridge. I don't know if there are perch and walleyes and unfiltered Lucky Strikes in Heaven, but I hope so. Keep the beer cold.

Love

the daughter

Outside my window97, hot and miserable

I am thinking freezer dinner tonight

I am thankful for fans that work

From the learning rooms …  NFL Red Zone is worth the money

I can't believe ...  How idiotic these GOP runners are

From the kitchen . . . nothing sounds good

I am wearing  comfy denim shorts and a tank top

I am creating . . .nothing today, it’s too damn hot

I am going   listening to my Outlander books on audio

I am reading. . . lots of books on my side table

I am hoping next year to have a real box garden

I am hearing the fans going back and forth.

Around the house2 dogs, husband and son

One of my favorite thingscold weather

A few plans for the rest of the week
1.  Return vitamins to Costco
2.  Pay some bills
3.  Make Spanish rice

30 September, 2015

This summer has been way too hot for way too long

And I fucking hate humidity. My dead perm curls even reactivated with the moisture in the air.

We had 4 fans going in our room, 1 ceiling, 2 oscillating, and 1 desk fan. I never go to sleep without a cover and for days kicked off everything around me.

When we had some rain, it was like living in the Midwest in August. You could cut it with a knife.

I am so looking forward to long sleeves, jeans, and comfy shoes. This has been the hottest summer I can remember.

Tomorrow my oldest turns 28. It is the 28th anniversary of the Whittier Narrows earthquake which may or may not be mentioned in the news. I was in the hospital when it hit. Talk about nerves.

My daughter flew home for an in/out weekend to celebrate her cousin's birthday last weekend. It was all hush-hush. The surprise came off quite well. Saturday night there was a big party at our house. I woke to find a bottle of Chocolate Bacon soda on my counter. I'm sorry, just no.

I had my 8th-second opinion for my work injury in 12 years. Hasn't changed, ain't gonna get better. Hurts like an SOB. Nothing to do but endure it. Shoulder snaps like a rubber band. Just sitting there and snap. You can hear it across the room.

1 more bitch. I've lost my skull candy earphones and I am not happy.

Peace.

FEAR NOT O FAITHFUL FOLLOWERS

I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN YOU. I'VE JUST BEEN IN THE CAVE RUMINATING AND CONTEMPLATING LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE FACT THAT DONALD TRUMP IS THE LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE WHO CAN'T EVEN REBUKE FALSEHOODS ABOUT OUR POTUS SPRAYED AT HIM BY HIS SUPPORTERS.

yes, that was a run-on sentence and my grammar teacher in 3rd grade would scratch at that with her RED pen.

I'll be back soon with love and laughter and my kiddo is coming home soon for an in/out visit. it's been 9 months since I've seen her.

15 August, 2015

Heat and humidity and brush fires.

It's brush fire season again here in Southern CA. At last count, there were three going in the LA/San Bernardino/Ventura Counties. They are not close to us. We are in an urban area, close to the coast, and there is no vegetation around us. Should an airplane crash, yes we would have fires, but that seems unlikely. The fire below is affecting the places that we go camping and when there is water in the river, gold panning. With the drought, it's more like a trickle than a river. So so sad.

The Fire Information Center will reopen Saturday, August 15th, at 8am. The Cabin Fire started at 1:07pm PST. Currently, the fire is 2500 acres and is 0% contained. 5 firefighters were evacuated with minor injuries. 462 hundred personnel are on scene. The location of the fire is 3 miles north Rincon-Redbox Rd. off HWY 39. HWY 39 is closed from the bottom at Sierra Madre to the Intersection of HWY 2. ave for the remainder of the weekend. The San Gabriel Canyon OHV Area is closed this weekend.

So we bitch and moan about the heat and wish for rain. The NOAA says that we are in for a Godzilla of an El Niño this season. I'd just like to see a good old-fashioned summer rainstorm. We used to get them here. We've had a couple of storms pass through, but it seems like we must be righteous, as the rain never rains on us.

This would be awesome though I'd have to hold the dogs. Which is no big deal.

Time for a nap. I'll leave with one of my favorite songs:
