Why I dislike Valentines Day......

I would much prefer being appreciated and cared for 365 days a year and not just one day. Why not bring me some flowers from Trader Joes on a Wednesday in the middle of January when the Christmas blues have finally let up.

It's going to be freaking 80º here tomorrow. I dislike that kind of heat. As I've said many, many times before I'm happy between 65-75 daytimes and I like very cool at night. Better to snuggle you know.

Only if it's mid winter weather. Of course my dear daughter experienced her first real blizzard in Chicago. Time will tell. I need to save money to go and see her this fall.

So if someone wants to make me smile, bring me these on any day but Valentines.

    The day this book came, I was down in the dumps. I hadn’t seen my daughter who moved to Chicago from our home in LA for nearly 6 months. I opened the book and I read a few of the pages and started smiling.

    On Christmas morning, my daughter and my niece were on the couches all bundled up and reading it to one another. Laughter abounded.

    It’s funny how small things can make such a difference in your life. I loved this book and it is close at hand to read on those days when things don’t go as we planned.

    I received this book for free from "Blogging for Books".

2015

So many things have happened already that I think I'm ready for Christmas and next year already.

The errant child came home for Christmas. It was like she was never gone except she was living out of her suitcase where all her clothes were rolled and a mess. The mouth hasn't changed, still sarcastic like her mommy. She's had already a touch of frigid. Very little snow, but lots of wind and cold.

Had a lovely trip to Las Vegas and won on a penny machine. That made it worthwhile even if the 2 restaurants we wanted to go to were closed. Next year for #30 it's going to be an all inclusive in the Caribbean. I want warm and sunny and big pools and spas.

The news around the ranch is that the pointer is a ratter. She's gotten 5 so far. That's 5 more than I wanted to have. They are in our walls and we can hear them in the attic. The landlord has been notified and has done jack shit.

So I'll give it another month and write the wife who is a lawyer and ask her to get an exterminator out here before I call one and take it off the rent.

Nearly time to get the man child from work and go over to his grannies. Might stop at Fry's Electronics and get a new keyboard because this one has a wonky Y. I friggin hate that.

Good night. Sleep Tight. Shut your doors and windows so nothing rodenty comes in the house.

A True Look at the Hermit Kingdom- Without You, There Is No Us- My Time with the Sons of North Korea's Elite

Book Title:
Without You, There Is No Us - My Time with the Sons of North Korea's Elite
Author Name(s):
Suki Kim
Category:
History - Korea
Additional Details:
Released: October 14th, 2014
Hardcover
304 Pages
$24.00 (USD)
I have just finished reading "Without You, There Is No Us" an account by journalist Suki Kim of her time teaching at the  PUST the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. Kim was an English teacher who was actually a journalist undercover. The school surprisingly was run by Evangelical missionaries who were under the auspices of the DPRK's minders. She was teaching the sons of the elite members of the DPRK's ruling party. Sons who's lives have always lived under the dark shadow of the Great Leaders Kim Il-Sun and Kim Jong-Il. They worship them and study the great Juche.

The places she talks about in her book, I've seen pictures of. Being an avid reader of foreign trip reports on airline message boards, there are a few interesting trip reports by inquisitive travelers who go to DPRK through foreign travel agencies. Their photos show stark streets with few people, immense monuments to the two Kims, propaganda billboards that urge the people of the country to work for the good of the nation.

Kim speaks of bus trips with no other vehicles on the road, still subjected to military checkpoints, where skeleton like people walk along the side of the road like wraiths. In her opinion, the people who aren't privileged are either soldiers or slaves. The elite sons though are slaves to the blatant indoctrination that they have grown up with. Though the teachers aren't really allowed to talk about their world, Kim manages to impart truths about her life to the amazement of her students.

A ghost of a chance....

I was busy getting ready to go to church yesterday and I saw a shadow move across my field of vision, it ran right next to our futon and then disappeared. It was our cat Squeaks who's been gone for more than a year. It's not the first time I saw her and I hope it's not the last. She was a wonderful cat.

Good Packer game. We all wished it was like T-Ball and they call mercy when the score is so horrible. The Bears coach is not coaching. Sad.

Gonna go on a road trip. The cabin fever is getting closed in.

Peace

Review: Thief of Glory

Book Title:
Thief of Glory - A Novel
Author Name(s):
Sigmund Brouwer
Category:
Fiction - Christian - Historical
Additional Details:
Released: August 19th, 2014
Trade Paperback
336 Pages
$14.99 (USD)

I thought I was pretty well educated on WW2, but now I see that I wasn't. The Pacific Theater and the actions of the Japanese Army against the Dutch citizens of Indonesia was horrific.

Thief of Glory addresses the story of one young man and his trials and travail from 1941, right after the attack on Pearl Harbor till his adulthood in the United States after the war. The chase of a marble will lead him from the prison camps of Malaysia to the halls of Congress.

He survived atrocities, deaths of family members and yet clung to one abiding hope: The goodness of God. He never let his faith in God desert him, nor did God.

It was riveting, scandalous, heartbreaking and redeeming book to read. I reccomend it to anyone who's interested in more than known history of the Pacific Theater, the hidden one where women and children were forced to make decisions which would impact them long after their incarceration.

I received this book free from Blogging for Books for review.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By the way, I won't entertain anonymous comments. If I put it out there you can identify yourself, this isn't a democracy, it's my little world. Deal with it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As my children are adults and can play video games as much or as less as they want, I find them to be more able to discern good from evil as well as any.

Disrespect can also be learned from parents who think that every thing outside their walls will lead their children down the path of death and destruction.

 When a cycle of hopelessness and poverty isn't alleviated it is the responsibility of the social services and the state government to implement programs to remedy it. When a child is shot because of the colors she wore, that reasoning has to be stopped. Why do we pay taxes? To support wars in countries that don't want us. To feed the pockets of the oligarchs who run this country behind the scenes? It's been going on for 100's of years.

 I taught public school and I saw the children of immigrants work harder than their peers because they appreciated the fact that they were allowed to go to school and learn. Americans should pay attention to that.

If you don't trust your children, bully them and abuse them, you don't deserve them. If you teach your children to hate their siblings because they left the roost and found the truth, then you are as culpable as any abuser. When you get old and expect your children to wait upon you, you're going to be sadly surprised that they don't visit, keep their children from you, and hate you.

I just found out today the the father of one of my nieces abused her and her brother, sexually and held it over them. No wonder they can't trust their mother, who had 5 other children when they were nearly grown. May he rot in hell.

Can you tell I'm in a shitty mood? Well I am. My arthritis is making my hands cramp, my shoulder is screaming in pain.

I'm done and over. Timer's gone off and I'm ready to leave the burner.

That's all folks.

Somedays I can't bear to have the tv on

The last few days have been filled with children being killed by being shot, run over by ice cream trucks, car accidents after being hit by drunks. The shootings in Ottawa because someone thinks their God is better than anyone else's. Today a school shooting in Washington and now 2 Sheriff's are killed in northern CA.

Why don't people care about other people? Things like this almost make me give up on God, because why are these horrible things happening? Did the parents of these shooters and drivers raise their children to be murderers? Does their hate overcome our love for our neighbor?

I guess all I can do is pray without ceasing.
