The Martian by Andy Weir A short review

Book Title:
The Martian - A Novel
Author Name(s):
Andy Weir
Category:
Fiction - Science Fiction - Action & Adventure
Additional Details:
Released: October 28th, 2014
Trade Paperback
400 Pages
$15.00 (USD)

Occupy Mars?
While I am not a real big fan of science fiction, I do follow space exploration and have a soft spot in my heart for Elon Musk and SpaceX.

This was an interesting book with so many emotions. Loss, death, elation, and the determination to stay alive. It kept me turning the pages, though I felt there was some homage to the film Mission to Mars, with one of the protagonists being alone on Mars until a rescue party found him.

Mark Watney was a complex character and his determination to stay alive made it worth reading. Spend the money and read the book. You'll enjoy it tremendously.

"I received this book free from Blogging for Books to review"

It"s March 12......

and this weekend it's predicted to be in the 90's. WHAT????????

Guess I'll get my shorts and tank top out and sit outside and read a book.

This post is for my husband & Bruce

Not too many people know that my husband is now an atheist. So we live in a mixed marriage. He partakes in the feasts we have at Easter and Christmas. But he goes on rants about aliens and how could there be a God who allows such violence and evil in the world. I can't tell him why but I still believe but I do. I don't doubt the innate belief that he has but I still have a spark of hope that I am not wrong.

***** to Bruce whom I admire and adore your posts, I promise to be a friend online who doesn't tell you you are wrong. ******

So to show you I have a sense of humor here's a cartoon I sent my husband today.

Another day 10 things to think about.

I've been thinking about things.
Stop, I know it's dangerous to unleash me on the world on a Wednesday.

1. The amount of testosterone in this house is getting overwhelming.

2. There are days I could spend in bed but I don't.

3. 47 more days till we get on an airplane for a quick trip across the desert to check a box on my husbands bucket list. (we'll get to my bucket list in another post).

4. We're going to fly. 10 hours (to/from) with my husband in a car is hard for me....

5. We were lucky to be upgraded to a spa suite (700 sq ft) at our hotel of choice.

6. And if all goes well, I can lay back in a jacuzzi spa tub on the 30th floor and watch ops at LAS while sipping wine and eating cheese and salami. Semi decadent I know.

7. My kiddo will be going on her Disney cruise the week after we go on our jaunt to Vegas. I am jealous.

8. I hate February. I feel like I just get the bills paid and then March looms.

9. They don't call it a dogs life for nothing. Sleep all day and then when the lonely tom cat comes out at night they are on the back patio barking into infinitum. Then in and sleeping on my side of the king sized bed.

10. I spent some money on myself. I got a LeSportsac bag and weekender for my trip. Got it from Amazon and it's way cheaper. Finally I match when I travel.

Also prayer, bone shaking, thoughts of healing energy, comfort for the family of the engineer of the Metrolink train that derailed yesterday. Massive chest injuries. Also comfort for those passengers still in the hospital.

Why I dislike Valentines Day......

I would much prefer being appreciated and cared for 365 days a year and not just one day. Why not bring me some flowers from Trader Joes on a Wednesday in the middle of January when the Christmas blues have finally let up.

It's going to be freaking 80º here tomorrow. I dislike that kind of heat. As I've said many, many times before I'm happy between 65-75 daytimes and I like very cool at night. Better to snuggle you know.

Only if it's mid winter weather. Of course my dear daughter experienced her first real blizzard in Chicago. Time will tell. I need to save money to go and see her this fall.

So if someone wants to make me smile, bring me these on any day but Valentines.

The day this book came, I was down in the dumps. I hadn’t seen my daughter who moved to Chicago from our home in LA for nearly 6 months. I opened the book and I read a few of the pages and started smiling.

On Christmas morning, my daughter and my niece were on the couches all bundled up and reading it to one another. Laughter abounded.

It’s funny how small things can make such a difference in your life. I loved this book and it is close at hand to read on those days when things don’t go as we planned.

I received this book for free from "Blogging for Books".

2015

So many things have happened already that I think I'm ready for Christmas and next year already.

The errant child came home for Christmas. It was like she was never gone except she was living out of her suitcase where all her clothes were rolled and a mess. The mouth hasn't changed, still sarcastic like her mommy. She's had already a touch of frigid. Very little snow, but lots of wind and cold.

Had a lovely trip to Las Vegas and won on a penny machine. That made it worthwhile even if the 2 restaurants we wanted to go to were closed. Next year for #30 it's going to be an all inclusive in the Caribbean. I want warm and sunny and big pools and spas.

The news around the ranch is that the pointer is a ratter. She's gotten 5 so far. That's 5 more than I wanted to have. They are in our walls and we can hear them in the attic. The landlord has been notified and has done jack shit.

So I'll give it another month and write the wife who is a lawyer and ask her to get an exterminator out here before I call one and take it off the rent.

Nearly time to get the man child from work and go over to his grannies. Might stop at Fry's Electronics and get a new keyboard because this one has a wonky Y. I friggin hate that.

Good night. Sleep Tight. Shut your doors and windows so nothing rodenty comes in the house.
